Giant Pine Scale Alert

Have you seen evidence of Giant Pine Scale (GPS)? It has a very distinct white fluffy material called honeydew which is produced by the insect.

PIRSA Biosecurity SA are currently targeting the removal of infested Pine trees in the Dernancourt area.

GPS will become more active in the warmer weather and you are asked to be vigilant for any signs of infestation.

The insect will greatly increase the production of this white honeydew which is a  key indicator associated with infection.

Greater understanding of the pests behavior indicates that infection can first occur in the canopy with no evidence on the truck.

We would encourage inspection of all Pine species focusing on the canopy area.  The use of binoculars, cherry pickers or climbers is encouraged if there is any suspicion that the pest might be present.

Please phone the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline (1800 084 881) if at all in doubt or concerned.

To assist in raising awareness of Giant Pine Scale, please click here to see our Pest Alert fact sheet.
